What are the ON CPD Requirements?

Ontario lawyers, every year by December 31st, must complete 12 hours total: at least 3 hours of Professionalism (including 1 in EDI Professionalism), and the remaining hours can be in Substantive content.

How can ON lawyers fulfill their CPD Requirements?

ON lawyers can fulfill their requirement by attending CPD programs offered by organizations or individuals in or outside Ontario. Some examples of CPD course formats include: Attending in person, online or by telephone, at live CPD programs and courses Participating as a registrant in a college, university, or other designated educational institution program, including interactive distance education and LL.M. programs Viewing or listening to recorded or archived CPD programs or courses Taking part in an interactive, online course Attending the CPD components of any board, bar, or law association meetings (including but not limited to firm, Law Society, Convocation, legal association, or Annual General meetings etc.)

How many credits can ON lawyers complete on Lawline?

Lawyers can complete all 12 CPD hours through accredited on-demand programs, including both Substantive and Professionalism content.

Can ON lawyers carry over CPD credits from one cycle to another?

CPD hours cannot be carried over from one year to the next.

How do ON lawyers certify compliance?

Lawyers must log CPD activities in their LSO Portal. The Law Society may conduct random audits, but there is no routine annual reporting required if compliance is met.

What is the deadline for ON lawyers to certify their compliance?

Lawyers and paralegals must report their CPD Hours using LSO Connects by March 31 of the year following the calendar year in which the CPD Requirement relates (e.g., CPD Requirements for 2024 must be completed by December 31, 2024 and reported by March 31, 2025).
