New York Newly Admitted CLE Requirements At a Glance

Total Credits: 32 Total — 16 transitional CLE credits in each of the first two years of Bar admission, including:

Note: 

*Of the 32 required credits, at least 1 must be in Cybersecurity, Privacy and Data Protection. This can be either Cybersecurity, Privacy and Data Protection - General or Cybersecurity, Privacy and Data Protection - Ethics.

Up to 3 credits of Cybersecurity, Privacy and Data Protection-Ethics can be used to fulfill the six-credit Ethics & Professionalism requirement.

CLE Deadline: The first 16 transitional CLE credit hours must be completed by the first anniversary of admission. The second 16 transitional CLE credit hours must be completed between the first and second anniversaries.

Carry Over Credit: Up to 8 credits can be carried over from year 1 to year 2. Up to 6 credits can be carried over from year 2 into the next reporting period. Ethics & Professionalism and Cybersecurity, Privacy and Data Protection - Ethics cannot carry forward.

Reporting: Attorneys in New York must certify their compliance on their attorney registration. Online registration can be found here. Certificates of attendance must be kept for four years but do not have to be sent to the CLE board.

Skills CLE credits can be completed by participating in CLE classes in one or more of the following formats:

Temporary Change: The New York CLE Board has issued an order temporarily allowing Newly Admitted Attorneys to complete their Skills requirement via live webcast, teleconference, and videoconference. This change is effective 3/11/20 - 6/30/25.
