Biography

For more than thirty years, as a federal prosecutor and private attorney, Peter’s practice has focused on areas of complex criminal and civil litigation.

In the sports arena, Peter has represented NFL players and coaches in high profile cases against the League. Peter recently scored a significant victory in the Ray Rice NFL disciplinary proceedings. He also successfully represented Jonathan Vilma in the New Orleans Saints “bounty” case, defeating Commissioner Roger Goodell’s effort to suspend Vilma from football for one year and, before that, Peter represented two Minnesota Vikings players in the “StarCaps” litigation that involved a groundbreaking challenge to the NFL’s internal arbitration procedures. In the professional golf arena, Peter recently brought suit on behalf of golfer Vijay Singh against the PGA, alleging that the Tour violated its duty of fair dealing in administering its disciplinary process.

Peter also has experience in a broad range of University Affairs, protecting the rights of coaches and student athletes with regard to NCAA actions and University oversight, and representing academic institutions, as well as University employees, in a variety of internal matters.

Peter is a white collar crime specialist, handling all phases of criminal litigation from pre- indictment through trial, post-conviction and appellate representation. Peter has represented corporate and individual clients in a vast array of criminal and civil matters including health care, money laundering, fraud, bribery, RICO, tax evasion and antitrust, and matters  involving federal espionage, Foreign Corrupt Practice Act, and international hedge fund and investment management. In addition, Peter has represented both government officials and private citizens in public corruption trials and investigations, and in congressional and other governmental and regulatory investigations.

Peter spent approximately seven years as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Eastern District of New York. During that time, Peter was awarded the United States Attorney General’s John Marshall Award for “Outstanding Legal Achievement.”

A 1976 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Peter received a Thouron Fellowship and matriculated at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he received a Master of Science Degree in Economics and International Relations. Peter then attended the Columbia University School of Law, where he received a Juris Doctor Degree in 1980.
