Maury holds a law degree from Georgetown University, where he concentrated on taxation, business law and real estate. He completed undergraduate work at the University of Pennsylvania, where, as a Dean's List student, he set a sort of academic record earning two degrees, with three majors in only four years: a Bachelor's in Business Science from Penn's Wharton School with majors in finance and accounting, plus a B.A. in political science.

Maury teaches as an Adjunct Professor at Catholic University's Columbus School of Law and in Georgetown University's MBA Program. His Law School teaching has included courses on Agency, Partnership & Fiduciary Law, Land Transactions and Legal Accounting. He has also taught law at Georgetown University Law Center. Under that School’s aegis he was asked to design and teach what has become Law for Managers in Georgetown's McDonough Business School MBA Program, which led to his switch to the MBA faculty. He regularly speaks to business, professional and academic groups on legal, business and taxation topics. Maury hosted and produced "General Counsel" a 42-segment cable-TV show.

He is the author of five books on business and legal subjects, including Basic Legal Forms for Business, The Right Price for Your Business and Balance Sheet Management, as well as dozens of articles, appearing in different professional and financial publications. He has written minicomputer programs for investment and tax analysis, and holds a patent on a food storage device. He has also served as an expert witness on financial, legal and real estate matters in a variety of cases.

In 1995 he was appointed by Virginia's Governor Allen as a member of its Virginia Board of Professional and Occupational Regulation, which oversees regulation of commercial activity in the State. In 1997 he was elected the Board's Chairman and reappointed by Governor Gilmore in 1999, remaining as Chair until his term expired in 2003. In 2001 he received the Patrick Henry Award from the Governor for outstanding board service. He is also active in several charitable and community organizations.
