Biography

Emil J. Ali is a partner at McCabe & Ali, LLP where he focuses his practice on helping patent and trademark practitioners understand the various ethical obligations under state and federal law.  His extensive experience includes counseling lawyers and law firms regarding lawyer transitions and mobility, conflicts issues, as well as malpractice avoidance.  Emil previously worked at the Office of Enrollment and Discipline (OED), the disciplinary authority for the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

While at the OED, Mr. Ali helped to promulgate the USPTO Rules of Professional Conduct, which are based upon the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct. His unique experience affords him an understanding of the regulation of the legal profession. Mr. Ali has routinely presented and written regarding best practices for professionals to avoid regulator complaints.  As a registered patent attorney, Mr. Ali also provides guidance to law firms and attorneys regarding various best practices in IP law. Additionally, Mr. Ali is an adjunct professor of law at Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, OR.

Mr. Ali is the Chair of the ABA-IPL Ethics and Professional Responsibility Committee as well as the Co-Chair of the AIPLA Committee on the Profession.  He continues to be involved with various other bar activities, including serving on the Oregon State Bar Unlawful Practice of Law Committee, as well as with various other organizations.
