Biography

Charlie Bingham is a seasoned attorney with more than 12 years of experience in the legal profession. He’s currently an attorney at Microsoft. As a member of Microsoft’s Corporate and External Legal Affairs U.S. Regulated Industries and Global Partner Solutions Sales teams, Charlie supports two multi-billion-dollar businesses. Charlie’s practice focuses on advising internal business clients on complex cloud computing and devices agreements with global partners as well as education, state, and local government customers in the U.S. He advises on general legal matters including advising on Microsoft’s traditional software licensing, consulting services and a variety of corporate and contractual matters. 

Charlie has won several awards for his work. He is the first recipient of the Microsoft Embracing Challenge/Growth Mindset award for creating an innovative contract approach which resulted in Microsoft selling over $30 million worth of Surfaces. He was honored in 2017 by the Association of Corporate Counsel as a Top 10 30-Something – a global award that distinguishes the outstanding achievements of in-house counsel between the ages of 30 and 39.  Charlie also is the recipient of the National Bar Association Young Lawyers Division’s 2018 Humanitarian Award which recognizes a young lawyer who has dedicated their career to improve the community, whether it be in education, community service, social services, health services or political activism. Charlie has received the Rising Star award from Howard University School of Law at their 2019 Sesquicentennial Gala – a young alumni award that recognizes the professional and personal achievements of an alumna/alumnus that graduated within the past 15 years and has made notable contributions to the legal profession, is a leader in the community and has made service contributions to Howard University School of Law. Recently, Charlie was awarded the National Bar Association’s 2019 40 Under 40 award which recognizes the nation's top 40 lawyers under the age 40 who exemplify a broad range of high achievement in the legal field, including in advocacy, innovation, vision, leadership and overall legal and community involvement.

Charlie is also a champion of diversity and is very involved in Microsoft's diversity efforts and is a member of the board of directors for the Georgia Justice Project. He is a regular presence on panels at events held by the Minority Corporate Counsel Association, National Bar Association, Black Entertainment Sports Law Association, Association of Corporate Counsel and Howard University School of Law speaking on topics including, A.I., data security and privacy, cloud computing, regulatory compliance, diversity and inclusion, and transitioning roles. He also actively mentors several lawyers, law students and individuals considering going to law school. Importantly, Charlie strives to utilize every available “pulpit” in his efforts to raise awareness about diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. 

Prior to joining Microsoft, he served as an Attorney-Advisor at the U.S. Department of the Interior, Office of the Solicitor – Branch of Acquisitions and Intellectual Property providing legal counsel and litigation support in a variety of management and administrative legal issues involved with the federal procurement process. Prior to the Department of the Interior, Charlie was an associate at the Washington, DC law firm, Arnold & Porter, where he focused on intellectual property, mergers and acquisitions and government contract transactions. 

Charlie is a 2008 Howard University School of Law graduate, received a Master of Arts in Teaching from Morgan State University in 2005 and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Jackson State University in 2002.
