Biography

Andrew Carlton Olivo is a member of Olivo PLLC, a boutique firm headquartered just north of Dallas, which uniquely focuses on the law of incapacity in all forms. With almost 80 years of experience, the firm helps people through days darker than many can imagine, including cases in juvenile delinquency, juvenile protection, guardianship, mental health, estate planning, and probate. The firm represents people at all stages, from municipal hearings to the United States Supreme Court.

A person with widely varying capabilities, Andrew still manages to pursue his varied professional and academic interests while handling the entirety of the firm’s appellate practice, as well as its student civil rights and mental health caseload. This flexibility was recently demonstrated when he gave testimony to the Select Committee of the United Kingdom’s House of Lords while briefing two cases to the Texas Supreme Court.

The usual constellation of advertising agencies have recognized Andrew’s work, but community service and education is his preferred measure of recognition. Andrew profoundly believes in supporting education at all levels, and is ex officio of the University of North Texas Alumni Association, the University of North Texas at Denton’s College of Arts & Sciences’ Development Board, and is a member of the University’s 1890 Club. Andrew is also a member of Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas’ St. Ignatius Society and the alumni associations of all his alma maters, including the U.S. Space Camp Alumni Association. Andrew has volunteered for numerous organizations, including most appropriately as a counselor at Father Flanagan’s Boys Town in Omaha, Nebraska. To the chagrin of his academic institutions, Andrew is a member of the Foundation of Legal Rights in Education’s Legal Network.

Andrew is an annoyingly proud Texan, having nearly completed the unique feat of living in or near all of Texas’ major cities. Originally from El Paso, Andrew attended the University of North Texas, where he earned his bachelor’s in Political Science with a field specialty in international relations. Having checked off Dallas-Fort Worth and El Paso, Andrew then attended St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio, where he earned the approbation of faculty and fellow students, having been elected President of various organizations and student Senator. Andrew also was a member of the University’s Civil Justice Clinic and published his first scholarly article while still in school. Having published in national security law, Andrew continued pursuing his earlier education, becoming one of the first students to receive a graduate certificate from Harvard University Extension School’s Nuclear Deterrence program. He insists that there is no conflict between his professional estate planning practice and his academic expertise in nuclear war.

Secrets and Lies: the Intelligence Community's DADT

    May 01, 2010

The intelligence community in the United States once intentionally supported a policy which made the US less safe, made it easier to blackmail assets, and deprived it of some of the most talented and patriotic Americans. Look back into the past to a time where this was considered normal.
