Overview

Implicit bias in the legal profession can be exhibited in different ways and, some of the time, it can present in ways that appear to be positive, which can be especially confusing and uncomfortable for the subject of the bias. This program, which is part two of a three-part series, continues to tackle the tricky subject of "implicit bias" (or "unconscious bias") in the practice of law, but now, the presenters focus specifically on biases that are disguised as compliments. Once again, poignant film vignettes are used to ignite interactive discussions among a roundtable of experienced practitioners that will help to shine a light on the harm of implicit bias, both for individuals and the organizations in which they serve. Participants will come away from this program with practical strategies for how to have constructive dialogue following an event.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand how implicit biases disguised as compliments operate and how they show up in your legal organization
  2. Recognize the potential risks and harms of "compliments" as described here, both to lawyers and the organization as a whole
  3. Identify practical tools and strategies for confronting instances of implicit bias that have been experienced or observed in your legal organization, as well as for how to handle the awkward situations when one is being confronted
  4. Discuss how leaders of law firms can effectively respond to instances of implicit bias when raised by lawyers and staff
