The NY Son of Sam Law

1h 15m

Created on December 19, 2015

Intermediate

Overview

Enacted by the New York legislature in 1977 after it learned that David Berkowitz was planning to sell his story of serial killing, the Son of Sam Law affected an accused or convicted person who contracted to speak or write about her or his crime. However, the Law has since been revised and has evolved substantially to become far broader in scope than its original incarnation. Join attorney Saad Siddiqui as he introduces practitioners to the Son of Sam Law and the nuances involved in either bringing or defending against a Son of Sam Law action.

Learning Objectives:

I.     Understand the original intent of the Son of Sam Law

II.    Identify modifications that have been made to the law and the impact of these modifications

III.   Recognize best practices for bringing or defending against a Son of Sam action
