Overview

This program will examine the far-reaching implications of the recent Alabama Supreme Court decision regarding in vitro fertilization (IVF) and its connection to the growing "personhood" movement. Designed for attorneys across various practice areas, the course will explore how this landmark ruling, which extends the definition of "children" to include cryopreserved embryos, may significantly impact multiple fields of law

Viewers will gain insights into the Alabama IVF decision, its relationship to the U.S. Supreme Court's Dobbs ruling, and the broader "personhood" movement. The program will benefit lawyers practicing in reproductive law, criminal law, tort law, matrimonial law, trust and estates, and child protective proceedings. Through an analysis of potential legal scenarios, viewers will develop a deeper understanding of how these decisions may reshape legal responsibilities and rights across their respective practice areas.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Analyze the Alabama IVF decision and the Dobbs ruling, evaluating their potential impact on patients seeking infertility treatments and reproductive rights
  2. Examine the "personhood" movement and its growing influence on legal interpretations of embryonic rights
  3. Assess the potential implications of extending "child" status to cryopreserved embryos in various legal contexts, including reproductive, criminal, and tort law
  4. Evaluate the possible effects of the "personhood" movement on matrimonial law, child dependency proceedings, and trust and estates practice
  5. Develop strategies to navigate the evolving legal landscape and advise clients on potential changes in rights and responsibilities across multiple practice areas
