Overview

The last year has demonstrated a continued evolution in the law and business of collegiate and professional sports. The increasing antitrust litigation against the NCAA, coupled with administrative challenges by the National Labor Relations Board has pushed college sports more and more into a professional model. The movement of conferences and the greater money paid to coaches, coupled with a "wild west" of name, image, and likeness agreements is further evidence of a system that is undergoing major change. The NCAA has been hamstrung by the pace of these legal assaults on its power.

In the area of professional sports, franchise sales hit record prices. The contract between superstar Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers is unique and raises questions about whether other players will seek to replicate these terms. So is the contract between Messi and Miami of the MLS. The continuing conflict in Ukraine and the more recent Israel-Hamas war may affect international sports and the Olympics. The continuing drama of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf is not yet resolved.

This CLE course discusses all of the above and more, as 2024 promises to be a very eventful year in the law of sports.
