Overview
2022 was a year of legal, business, and cultural shifts in the world of sports. College athletes are coming closer and closer to being employees; the NCAA's powers have been diminished and the threats of further antitrust challenges could diminish the body even more. NIL deals with college athletes continue and with the blessings of their schools. Toxic work environments in U.S. women's soccer produced a moment of reckoning as owners are forced to sell franchises due to the toxic work environment. Sports betting continues at breakneck pace as over 30 states have legalized the practice. The NFL's new dispute resolution standards and the suspension of Deshaun Watson. International human and political rights became center stage with Beijing Olympics and the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. New labor agreements in Women's Soccer and Major League Baseball will result in labor peace after litigation and lockouts.
This program will discuss all of the above and more, as 2023 promises to be a time when the legal issues in sports continue to change. This event is intended for general practitioners and anyone interested in practicing in the field. However, it is open to any attorney who is a sports fan.
