Aging in place is a common wish among seniors. Assisting clients with a plan to age in place requires strategic planning, asset protection and working with a team of professionals to seamlessly aid clients in protecting their assets.

This course, presented by Elder Law attorney Melissa Negrin-Wiener, Financial Advisor Katie Coleman, Insurance Specialist Oren Wiener, and Reverse Mortgage Specialist Frank Melia, offers a comprehensive view on the following learning objectives.


Learning Objectives:

  1. Examine the more complex obstacles elder law practitioners encounter when assisting a client in downsizing, paying for care, and protecting the family home
  2. Analyze some of the classic planning techniques used by financial planners with regard to planning for long term care
  3. Review insurance issues with regard to the family home and aging in place
  4. Explore the use of reverse mortgages as a tool to age in place

Melissa Negrin-Wiener

Genser Cona Elder Law

Melissa Negrin-Wiener is a partner at Genser Dubow Genser & Cona. Ms. Negrin-Wiener manages the Government Benefits Department while concentrating her practice in the areas of Medicaid eligibility planning, asset protection planning, disability matters, guardianships, estate planning and Veteran benefits. She also supervises the preparation of Medicaid Applications for nursing home care, home health care and community benefits.

Ms. Negrin-Wiener currently serves as co-chair of the Healthcare Committee of the Hauppauge Industrial Association of Long Island. She is the immediate past President of the Suffolk County Women’s Bar Association and was formerly the Vice-President of Programs and Membership and the past co-chair of the Elder Law Committee. She is a State Certified Court Evaluator and Counsel to Guardian and incapacitated persons and is accredited by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Ms. Negrin-Wiener is an Advanced Elder Law Mediator trained by the New York Peace Institute, serves as a Mediator on the Nassau County Bar Association Alternative Dispute Resolution Panel, and was recently appointed as a Court Examiner.

Ms. Negrin-Wiener has been named by Long Island Business News as one of the “Top 50 Most Influential Women in Business”. She has also received the prestigious “Leadership in the Law” award and the 2017 "Outstanding Women in Law" Award from Hofstra University. Ms. Negrin-Wiener received the “40 Under 40 Rising Stars on Long Island” award from Long Island Business News and the Outstanding Pro Bono Attorney award from Touro Law School. She has been featured in Long Island Business News and profiled in the Suffolk Lawyer for her charitable works, including her work on behalf of Senior Dreams Come True, a non-profit run by GDGC which grants wishes for low-income seniors. Ms. Negrin-Wiener has been a legal expert for Newsday’s Ask the Expert column and is a frequent lecturer at professional organizations, assisted living facilities and senior citizens groups. She has authored numerous articles for The Suffolk Lawyer, the Nassau Lawyer, the New York Law Journal and the HIA Hauppauge Reporter. She has been quoted in such publications as Long Island Business News, The Suffolk Lawyer and the Chicago Tribune and has appeared as a guest on WFAN, WBAB and WHRU radio. Television credits include WABC-TV, FIOS TV and Queens Public Television. Ms. Negrin-Wiener is also the host of her own radio show, "Elder Law Matters" on 1033.9FM.

Ms. Negrin-Wiener assisted in the development of GDGC’s workplace wellness program entitled “Tools and Advice for Working Caregivers” (TAWC). TAWC is an employee benefits program provided at no cost to the employer which assists employees who are caring for aging loved ones. The program is designed to keep working caregivers at work, maximizing productivity and promoting job security while reducing absenteeism, downtime and turnover.

Ms. Negrin-Wiener serves as the chair of GDGC Charitable Events, a not-for-profit organization committed to enhancing the quality of life for the elderly, disabled and the underprivileged. She dedicates much of her time to raising money for charitable causes including the Long Island Fight for Charity, the American Heart Association, the MS Walk and GDGC’s Midnight Run relief mission to hand deliver food and warm clothes to New York City’s homeless. She is also active in a variety of community outreach programs. The latest charitable program sponsored by GDGC Charitable Events and launched by Ms. Negrin-Wiener is Senior Dreams Come True. The program benefits low income seniors on Long Island by granting wishes--from helping a senior meet basic needs to fulfilling a lifelong dream.

Ms. Negrin-Wiener is a member of the Suffolk County Bar Association’s Elder Law Committee, the New York State Bar Association, the Nassau County Bar Association, the Suffolk County Women’s Bar Association and the Advanced Elder Law Focus Group. She is also a chair member of the Hauppauge Industrial Association (HIA) and serves as the Charities Coordinator for 100 Women Who Care about Long Island. Ms. Negrin-Wiener graduated from Binghamton University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, Politics and Law. She received her Juris Doctor from Hofstra University.

Frank Melia

Frank Melia entered the financial services industry in 1990 and worked as a financial advisor until the year 2000. Residential & Commercial Lending have been Frank’s specialty for the past 18 years. Frank regularly appears on the AM970 Radio show “Ask the Lawyer with Mike Connors” as a reverse mortgage expert. Frank is a resource to Elder Law Attorneys and recently was interviewed regarding Trust Lending Options in the NYSBA Law Journal. Frank received his Certified Mortgage Planning Specialist designation in 2007 & offers mortgage planning services including Lending Options for Homes held in Irrevocable Trusts.

Oren Wiener

Oren Wiener graduated from Stony Brook University in 1996 and has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. He has over 20 years experience in the Insurance Industry with Brokers Licenses in both Property & Casualty and Life & Health. He began his career in insurance straight out of college and started his first job at Club Agency, the insurance division of AAA.  It was at Club Agency that Oren was given the opportunity to obtain his insurance licenses. He worked for Club Agency until 1999 and then left to work for DCAP Insurance where he stayed until 2003. Oren then made the move to State Farm Insurance Agency in Suffolk County focusing mainly on selling Personal Lines Insurance. Working at State Farm gave him a different perspective as an Agent after previously working on the Broker side for 7 years. Oren left State Farm as his desire for knowledge and diversity grew. Oren moved to CBS Coverage Group in 2007 where he was able to expand his horizons and now writes all type of insurance including Business Insurance and Benefits. CBS merged with 5 other offices and changed their name to AssuredPartners Northeast LLC in 2017. Oren thrives when he can help people protect their assets while saving them money and he enjoys the challenge when other competing companies turn clients away. He owns a home in Suffolk County and lives with his wife and family.

Katie Coleman

Katie Coleman, CFP ®, is a Financial Advisor and Managing Partner at Siena Wealth Advisory Group, a private wealth advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. She has been in the financial services industry for 14 years and is passionate about helping people achieve their financial goals and pursue their life dreams. Katie is originally from Atlanta, Georgia and graduated from the University of Georgia, Terry College of Business with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management. Katie moved to New York in 2007. That same year she joined Siena Wealth Advisory Group and in 2012 Katie became a partner in the firm. Together, with her business partner Joseph De Sena, she has trained over 600 financial advisors across the country. In January 2014, Katie was named as one of Long Island Business News’ 40 Under 40, which honors outstanding members of the business community on Long Island who are under the age of 40.  In 2015, Katie was also a finalist for the Athena International Young Professional Leadership Award. She has been quoted as a financial expert in publications such as the Wall Street Journal, NY Post and Long Island Business News and most recently appeared on CNBC’s “On the Money”.  Katie holds her Series 7, 66 and New York State Life & Health Licenses, and is a CFP ®, Certified Financial Planner practitioner.

Katie enjoys spending time with family, reading and traveling and is a Board Member of the Michael Magro Foundation. She currently resides in Oakdale, NY with her husband Bob, chocolate lab Tuna and their two daughters, Charleston and Sailor.
