Overview
This program, presented by Scott Hecker and Melissa Ortega, will discuss the Department of Labor's ("DOL") focus on protecting "vulnerable" workers, including through enforcement efforts undertaken by DOL's Occupational Safety and Health Administration ("OSHA") concerning workplace safety and whistleblower protections.
DOL is looking to use every tool in its toolbox to ensure employers comply with relevant safety laws. OSHA's sister agency, the Wage and Hour Division ("WHD"), is charged with enforcing child labor laws - including safety requirements - under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Despite the allocation of enforcement authority, there are certainly safety and health issues surrounding younger workers, so this program will also explore those concerns.
-
Review OSHA compliance concerns with respect to vulnerable workers
-
Identify DOL's enforcement activity and litigation priorities
-
Discuss overlapping interests with WHD's child labor initiatives
