Overview

Stepping into a courtroom for the first time is one of the most demanding moments in a new attorney's career. Based on the "Friedman Framework" for effective advocacy, this skills-based course is designed specifically for newly admitted attorneys in New York. Through practical instruction and lessons from a legacy of appellate excellence, participants will learn how to transition from simply repeating briefs to engaging in a focused judicial dialogue. This course provides the tools to advocate with confidence, from mastering the first two minutes of a motion argument to handling the "hot bench" of New York's trial and appellate courts.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Organize a compelling oral argument by applying the "Friedman Framework" of simplicity, starting with the winning point, and focusing on the decisive issues that help a judge decide the case
  2. Respond effectively to judicial questions by treating the argument as a conversation, answering questions directly before explaining, and using inquiries as opportunities to clarify the record and maintain the argumentative thread
  3. Communicate with clarity and precision under pressure by employing techniques to manage time effectively, avoiding the mistake of reading from notes, and using plain language instead of jargon
  4. Develop and project a professional courtroom presence by understanding the importance of candor to the tribunal, maintaining eye contact, and building credibility through accurate citations and professional composure
