Agreeing to comply with a prospective client’s outside counsel guidelines can help a lawyer obtain work in a competitive marketplace. However, outside counsel guidelines - which can cover everything from billing protocols and cybersecurity protection to the scope of the representation - can also create risks for law firms that do not take the time to fully vet the guidelines before agreeing. This presentation, taught by Dentons attorneys Craig Giometti and Alanna Clair, will cover common terms and risks of outside counsel guidelines to help firms capitalize on opportunities and meet expectations. Clair is a co-author of bi-monthly articles on legal ethics in “The Daily Report,” the legal treatises “The Lawyer’s Handbook: Ethics Compliance and Claim Avoidance,” and the 2020 edition of “Georgia Legal Malpractice Law.”
Alanna Clair is a Senior Managing Associate at Dentons US LLP in Washington, DC. She is a member of the Litigation team, where her focus is professional liability, insurance defense, and appellate issues. Alanna is the co-author of The Lawyer’s Handbook: Ethics Compliance and Claim Avoidance (2013), a practical guide on malpractice prevention for attorneys, published by American Lawyer Media. Alanna is a graduate of Wellesley College and The University of Michigan Law School.
Craig Giometti is a Managing Associate at Dentons US LLP in Washington, D.C.
