Overview
This program will begin with a brief overview of copyright law in the United States, with a special focus on the two distinct copyrights in recorded music - i.e., musical compositions and sound recordings. Amy E. Mitchell will then walk through the basic steps a creator needs to take to license or "clear" third-party music for use in their audiovisual productions and some of the key terms that should be included in the resulting music licensing agreements.
This program will benefit attorneys who represent creators who produce and/or incorporate music into their content as well as attorneys who wish to learn more about lawfully incorporating music into their own works.
Learning Objectives:
Identify the two distinct copyrights in recorded music
Review when a music license is required and, if required, what type of license to seek
Discuss the basic terms and process for obtaining a music license from the various rights holders
