Overview

Originally developed to address the emotional toll legal professionals face, this updated program explores the growing concern around compassion fatigue, secondary trauma, and burnout - issues that continue to impact attorneys across practice areas. Many lawyers enter the profession with a strong desire to help others, yet over time, the cumulative effect of engaging with clients' pain, trauma, and high-stakes challenges can take a serious toll. Known as secondary traumatic stress or "compassion fatigue," this condition is less discussed than traditional burnout but equally dangerous. It manifests physically, emotionally, and mentally - leaving legal professionals vulnerable to exhaustion, numbness, and even impairment. This program examines the intersection between compassion fatigue and the increasing rates of substance use, mental health disorders, and professional impairment in the legal field, offering insight and resources for education, prevention, and support.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize the early warning signs of impairment, particularly those tied to stress, burnout, trauma, and compassion fatigue

  2. Access and utilize free services offered by Lawyers Assistance Programs for attorneys, judges, law students, and their families

  3. Identify common barriers that prevent legal professionals from seeking help and how to overcome them

  4. Explore how education can help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and addiction in the legal profession

  5. Apply effective strategies for approaching and supporting impaired colleagues or clients
