Course Description

In this program, join attorney Will Creeley, Senior Vice President of Legal and Public Advocacy for the nonpartisan Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, for a comprehensive discussion of the law governing student and faculty First Amendment rights and today’s campus speech controversies. Creeley will provide viewers with a thorough overview of the foundational cases outlining student and faculty speech rights, demonstrating how free speech principles protect all students and faculty, regardless of viewpoint. Creeley will venture beyond the headlines and cable news debates to examine what legal precedent tells us about how colleges may respond to controversial speakers on campus and faculty social media flare-ups.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explore breadth of precedent protecting student and faculty First Amendment rights
  2. Discuss why free speech is worth protecting for all students and faculty
  3. Explain how freedom of expression differs between public and private universities
  4. Review legal guidelines for controversial speakers on campus
  5. Address First Amendment concerns for faculty social media use
