Overview

Any number of questions may arise when an employer is contemplating parting ways with staff - whether the decision relates to one employee or many, whether the separation is the result of poor performance by an employee, new leadership, or a sudden loss of funding - and each situation is unique. In each though, employee separations implicate laws that employers, and their counsel, need to be aware of.

In this course, Labor and Employment attorneys Kristina Grimshaw and Kate Townley discuss the wide range of legal issues that may be involved in these decisions, from potential discrimination claims under federal, state and local laws, notice and disclosure requirements, and obligations under federal and state WARN Acts. This course provides useful information about how employers can navigate these difficult situations.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify issues that may arise when an employment relationship ends, particularly in a mass separation context

  2. Assess riskier employment separation actions, learn methods to navigate those risks

  3. Learn how best to prepare for larger reductions in force, group terminations, and mass layoffs, and anticipate issues that may arise
