Overview

Election laws, political activity, and election administration have been in the daily headlines as the 2024 election approaches. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled on key election-related issues. In the wake of the pandemic and the 2020 elections, states have revised and changed election laws in ways that react to concerns of integrity and suppression. Polls show that a majority of Americans agree that the 2024 elections will be pivotal for our democracy, although for different reasons. No matter where one is situated in the political spectrum, it is incontrovertible that elections are under legal scrutiny as never before. Drawing on the experience of a seasoned election law practitioner, and the perspective of a non-election law attorney deeply involved in efforts to expand the participation of younger lawyers in civic engagement, this program seeks to unpack election law issues that lawyers, their firms, and their clients may face in this election year. It includes a call to action for non-election lawyers to become involved in the democratic process by serving as poll workers or otherwise supporting election administration.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Review recent election law legal developments

  2. Discuss the role of non-election lawyers in elections

  3. Explore opportunities to support election administration
