Day in the Life of an Employment Lawyer: Plaintiff's Side
2h 9m
Created on May 15, 2012
Overview
The challenging and dynamic field of employment law is one that has grown significantly and will continue to grow in the coming years. Additionally, the United States Supreme Court, over the last several terms, has heard arguments in employment law-related cases perhaps more so than before. With the prevalence of many municipalities following the lead of NewYork City and passing their own, expansive local human rights laws, we believe that an introduction to this field is not only important because it is interesting, but also one that is quite timely as the field is presently at a significant point in legal history.
This program will take the audience through a day in the life of an employment law firm, with specific focus on employment discrimination law. It will be presented essentially from the plaintiff’s perspective combining both lecture, discussion among the panel, and interaction with the live audience. All of the panelists are either Partners or Associates at Schwartz & Perry, and will present the various steps in the process of how an employment discrimination claim is handled by our office - from the initial phone call we receive from the potential client to contact with Counsel for the Defendant, the drafting a of complaint, the nature of the discrimination and retaliation claims, discovery, depositions, the summary judgment motion, and all the other related matters that must be addressed. Additional topics will also be covered such as the New York City Human Rights law, mediation and negotiation, as well as damages and remedies. It is our hope that no question will be left unanswered.
Agenda:
I. How to Effectively Commence an Employment Discrimination Claim
II. First Contact with the Employer
III. Complaint
IV. Mediation
