This intermediate course, led by immigration attorney Ruby Powers, an expert with more than a decade of asylum experience, outlines best practices and suggestions on how to prepare the asylum application and additional supplemental materials to put a client’s best case forward in convincing the adjudicator of their eligibility. She will also propose asylum office-specific advice on preferences for filing deadlines and specific details of various asylum offices.

In addition to the application and supplemental materials, this course will address how to prepare a client for the best asylum interview or immigration court hearing experience, including the three sections of the affirmative asylum interview and best practices to prepare a client for a smooth experience in an already stressful process. Learn best practices on how to prepare a client for the immigration court hearing and being cross examined by the trial attorney and the immigration judge, as well as how to formulate and anticipate questions so that a client will be prepared for the interview or hearing.

Ruby L. Powers is the founder and managing attorney of Powers Law Group, P.C. Located in Houston, Texas and Hackensack, New Jersey, the five-attorney firm focuses on immigration law including asylum, waivers of inadmissibility, deportation, family– and employment-based immigration. She is Board Certified in Immigration and Nationality Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, one of 164 such attorneys in Texas. A graduate of University of North Carolina School of Law, she is an alumna of Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses, and is a member of Leadership Houston's current class.

As the child of a Mexican immigrant, Powers gravitated toward an international life by later marrying a Turkish immigrant. Having lived and studied in Belgium, Mexico, Turkey, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates, Powers speaks Spanish, French, and a hint of Turkish.

With a passion for service and justice coupled with cultural understanding and an interest for immigrants, Powers dedicates her law practice to immigration law with focus on areas of immigration law including: asylum, family-immigration, employment-based immigration, waivers, removal and deportation proceedings, and citizenship and naturalization. For almost a decade, Ruby L. Powers has managed her firm and in 2011 she ran her law firm from Dubai and Turkey for 14 months. In April 2018, she opened the firm’s office in New Jersey.

She is currently serves on the AILA USCIS Service Center Operations Liaison Committee, TSC Subcommittee and the Media Advocacy Committee. She has served as AILA’s Law Practice Management Chair between 2015-2017 and TX Chapter Advocacy Liaison 2015-2018. Powers was awarded the AILA Advocacy Award 2017, Houston Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 Award and Women Who Mean Business Women to Watch Finalist, Houstonia Magazine Top Lawyer, and Super Lawyers Rising Star.

She is a frequent national and international speaker and author on immigration law and law practice management topics.

When not running her law firm or doing community work, she enjoys spending time and playing board games and traveling with her husband and their two young children.
