Louisiana CLE Requirements for Attorneys

Louisiana attorneys are considered experienced after they have completed the first two calendar years of admission to the Louisiana Bar and have completed the Newly Admitted LA attorney CLE requirements.

Experienced Louisiana attorneys must complete 12.5 CLE credits each year, including at least 1 hour of Ethics CLE and at least 1 hour of Professionalism CLE.

Experienced Attorneys can fulfill their LA CLE Requirements by attending CLE classes that have been approved and accredited by the Committee on Mandatory Continuing Legal Education. Some approved formats are:

• Self-Study CLE: (Maximum 4 credits per year)
  • On Demand Videos or Audio
  • Live Webcasts/Webinars
• Live CLE
  • Traditional, in-person CLE classes

Attorneys can complete up to 4 credits on Lawline through On Demand courses. Lawline webcasts do not qualify for live credit in Louisiana. Our Louisiana course catalog can be found here. 

Yes! Experienced Attorneys in Louisiana can earn CLE credit for the following types of activities:

• Teaching CLE. Louisiana attorneys will receive 6 CLE credits per hour of instruction of an approved CLE activity, provided that the also prepares thorough, high quality written materials.
  • If the attorney only prepares a one or two page outline of the program, or does not provide written materials, then the attorney will only earn 3 CLE credits per hour of instruction.
  • If the attorney teaches the same course again, they are eligible to receive one-half of the credits available for the initial presentation.
• Teaching Law School or Undergraduate Law Courses.  Attorneys in Louisiana will receive 6 CLE credits per hour of academic credit awarded by an American Bar Association-accredited Law School or an accredited college or university.
• Legal Research and Writing. Louisiana attorneys can earn credit by writing a law review article, published by an ABA-accredited law school, or by writing a book on legal matters published by a recognized publishing company. Attorneys will earn 6 CLE credits for each article or book published.
• Service as a Bar Examiner. Louisiana attorneys will receive 8 CLE credits per year for serving as a member of the Committee on Bar Admissions and 6 CLE credits per year for serving as an assistant bar examiner. Attorneys cannot receive credit for both activities in a given year.
• Attending Law School Classes. Attorneys in Louisiana may earn CLE credit for attending law school classes at ABA-accredited law schools. LA attorneys earn 6 CLE credit hours for each hour of academic credit awarded by the law school.
• Attending Meetings of the Council of the Louisiana Law Institute. Attorneys earn 1 hour of CLE credit for every two hours of meeting attendance, maximum of 10 CLE credits per year.

Experienced Attorneys must complete their LA CLE requirement by December 31st each year.

Yes! Experienced Attorneys can carry forward up to 8 CLE credits per year into the next reporting cycle. However, attorneys cannot carry forward Ethics or Professionalism credits.
