Biography

Alexis Scott Berkowitz represents individuals, companies, and nonprofit organizations in matters of business, employment, the arts, media, intellectual property, and economic and social grievances.

She champions a flexible and resourceful approach to relationship building, dealmaking, dispute resolution, and litigation strategy, providing counsel that is highly customized and equal parts innovative and practical. She views her clients as partners and takes a quality over quantity approach to her caseload to ensure that she can offer personalized, dedicated attorney-client relationships to all of her clients. Ms. Berkowitz’s practice spans across multiple areas of public and private law, including art and media transactions and project management, corporate and nonprofit governance, contractual agreements and licensing, copyright and trademark enforcement, employment and labor counseling and litigation, anti-discrimination and sexual harassment, civil rights, deceptive business practices, and property and tenant rights. Her primary areas of practice are carefully curated to interrelate and overlap, enabling her to bring a comprehensive perspective to her clients’ legal needs.

Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Berkowitz honed her practice in a number of diverse settings, including Shearman & Sterling, LLP and the City Bar Justice Center of the New York City Bar Association. She has served as litigation counsel for some of the world’s largest and most reputable multi-national financial institutions and businesses and has played a substantial role in numerous large-scale law reform efforts, including several landmark civil rights and consumer protection class action lawsuits. In addition to being a skilled litigator, she has cultivated a thriving transactional and “outside in-house counsel” practice, with a focus on artists and institutional clients in creative industries such as fine arts, film, fashion, interactive media, publishing, and hospitality. Her varied background and experience allows her to provide consultation that integrates legal and business development considerations, which is a particularly valuable asset to her start-up and entrepreneurial business clients.

Ms. Berkowitz earned her Juris Doctor at Cornell Law School where she was an Abraham Goldman Scholar and an executive editor of the Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy. Over the years, she has published several articles and white papers on topics of civil and economic rights, and she has received several acknowledgments and awards her professionalism and achievements, including the 2010 Legal Aid Society Pro Bono Publico Award and the New York Bar Association’s 2011 Empire State Counsel honorific. Alexis has been selected by Super Lawyers as a New York Metro Area Rising Star every year since 2015.

Ms. Berkowitz routinely devotes her time to providing pro bono legal services in the New York City community in the areas of foreclosure prevention, police misconduct, and the arts. She is a third generation New Yorker, proud Brooklyn resident, music lover, amateur astronomer, and bialy enthusiast.
