The sports industry is full of big deals, front page news stories, and global interest. The multi-billion dollar industry is made up of an ecosystem consisting of a myriad of complex transactions spanning various legal disciplines.  From the hot dog sold, the contract of your favorite player, the venue hosting the event, to the broadcast of the game, each aspect of the sports experience is the result of a negotiated transaction.  

This course, led by John Ruzich, Chief Administrative Officer & Chief Legal Officer, Legends and Jared Bartie Partner, Entertainment, Sports and Media, O’Melveny & Myers, will provide an overview of the various key areas of deals within the sports industry and the nuts and bolts of the agreements related to these areas.

Jared F. Bartie

O'Melveny & Myers LLP

Featured in SportsBusiness Journal’s “Power-Players: Outside Counsel” rankings and named “Sports Attorney of the Year” by the National Bar Association, Jared Bartie has more than two decades of sports and media experience, as both an attorney and business executive.

He regularly counsels sports clients on a variety of high-profile matters, including team investments, prominent naming rights and sponsorship transactions, and media rights agreements. Jared also advises on arena operating agreements, food and beverage agreements, merchandise agreements, ticketing arrangements, suite licenses and front office, coach and player agreements.

Jared’s sports and media experience includes working as acting chief counsel, productions at Black Entertainment Television; as chief legal officer and general counsel of the United States Tennis Association; as a senior member of the NBA’s team marketing and business operations group; and as general counsel and chief administrative officer of the NBA Charlotte Bobcats.


John Ruzich

Legends

John Ruzich joined Legends as Senior Vice President and General Counsel in 2012.  Prior to joining Legends, John served as Senior Vice President of Business & Legal Affairs/General Counsel for DreamWorks Classics (f/k/a Classic Media). During his tenure at DreamWorks Classics, he was responsible for a globally-recognized portfolio of family and pop-culture entertainment brands, including Where’s Waldo?Casper the Friendly GhostLassie and The Lone Ranger.  He negotiated home video, television and digital distribution agreements for a library of over 3,600 hours of programming in 170+ territories worldwide. Additionally, he oversaw major motion picture agreements and several mergers and acquisitions.  Prior to joining DreamWorks Classics, John served in the legal department of World Wrestling Entertainment. He began his legal career at the New Jersey Devils hockey club and was part of the 2000 Stanley Cup Championship Team.

John is a graduate of the University of Miami and St. Thomas University School of Law.
