A growing number of security breaches have led to stricter regulations on health information, as it can be particularly valuable to hackers and is therefore a prime target. This is a risk that is shared by all, from large drug chains to small independent pharmacies. In addition to being aware of cybersecurity threats, pharmacies must also be cognizant of complex regulations, such as HIPAA and HITECH. In this course, Wilentz’s Angelo Cifaldi and Satish Poondi discuss the stringent requirements on how patient health information should be treated as imposed by these regulations.
I. Identify recent changes to HIPAA enforcement
II. Apply HIPAA principles to the pharmacy setting
III. Discuss federal HIPAA compliance audits
IV. Describe methods to handle complaints and avoid litigation
V. Address recent HIPAA news and legal developments
