Overview

Immigration practitioners should be aware that LGBT individuals face certain distinct issues in immigration law. In this program, attorneys George Tenreiro of Baldassare & Mara, LLC and Guy Menahem of Lightman Law Firm LLC will address those issues, including complications that arise when processing same-sex marriage petitions, fiancé visa applications filed by same-sex binational couples, and asylum claims based upon sexual orientation. The course will provide an overview of how marriage petitions, fiancé visa applications, and asylum claims are generally processed in order to understand differences that arise when working with LGBT individuals.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Obtain a basic understanding of certain forms of immigration relief, including marriage petitions, fiancé visa applications, and asylum cases
  2. Recognize policy and procedural issues affecting LGBT individuals regarding these practice areas
  3. Identify ways to better represent this population
