Overview
To the surprise of many consumers, the federal government takes a relatively limited role in protecting the welfare of animals in our food system. Legal protections exist primarily for livestock (not poultry) and only during transport and slaughter.
This course, taught by attorney Liz Hallinan, the Founder and Executive Director of The Greenfield Project, will provide an overview of the federal laws and regulations that impact farm animal welfare. It will also delve into the practical applications of these laws and debates whether these applications are legally permissible. The course provides practicing attorneys with insights into defending or challenging a complex regulatory scheme and is also a starter guide to the existing purchasing options for consumers looking to prioritize animal welfare.
Learning Objectives:
- Review the federal laws protecting farm animals and their welfare
- Examine how federal agencies interpret and apply these laws
- Explore alternative approaches to farm animal welfare legislation and regulatory law
