This course will illustrate ethical issues and malpractice claims that are unique to corporate lawyers, even those who practice as in-house counsel. The risks for lawyers are increasing, as are the costs of defending bar grievances and malpractice lawsuits. By identifying some common pitfalls and risks, attorneys are better positioned to prevent or defeat claims.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Receive guidance on popular sources of ethics complaints and malpractice claims against corporate lawyers
  2. Identify ethical issues more common to corporate lawyers, including conflicts of interest, documenting the scope of engagement, cyber risks, and closing files
  3. Learn from recent studies on malpractice claims to increase the likelihood of defeating a claim


Alanna Clair


Alanna Clair is a Senior Managing Associate at Dentons US LLP in Washington, DC. She is a member of the Litigation team, where her focus is professional liability, insurance defense, and appellate issues. Alanna is the co-author of The Lawyer’s Handbook: Ethics Compliance and Claim Avoidance (2013), a practical guide on malpractice prevention for attorneys, published by American Lawyer Media. Alanna is a graduate of Wellesley College and The University of Michigan Law School.

Craig Giometti


Craig Giometti is a Managing Associate at Dentons US LLP in Washington, D.C. He represents clients in jurisdictions across the country in connection with professional liability and insurance matters, with a particular focus on legal malpractice claims and ethics advice for attorneys. Craig also has written several articles on a wide range of insurance and professional liability issues. He received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Illinois.
