An Overview of the EU General Data Protection Regulations

Overview

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union becomes enforceable on May 25th, 2018, some two years after it was first passed in April of 2016. This sweeping regulation, created to protect the personal data of EU citizens, will affect almost every online business in the world with fines potentially as high as 4% of annual turnover - that's in total sales, not profit.

With so much at stake, and such a new and wide-reaching regulation, it is imperative that US companies have at least a baseline knowledge of the contours and consequences of the law. This course, taught by Logan Lo, an IP and IT attorney at Woods Lonergan LLP, aims to provide a broad overview of the regulation for those that have little to no knowledge of the subject.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Review a brief history and definition of the GDPR
  2. Discuss which companies are affected (hint: almost all)
  3. Assess what type of data is protected by the regulation
  4. Identify what rights are created and protected by the GDPR
  5. Grasp the role of a Data Protection Officer (DPO)
  6. Advise your client on GDPR compliance
