Catastrophic burn injury cases pose unique challenges to attorneys. It is critical that you understand not just the legal theories you will be pursuing and the evidentiary challenges you will face, but also the special needs of your client. Join experienced litigator and certified civil trial attorney, David Schmid, for this introductory presentation on effective techniques for investigating, assessing and litigating catastrophic burn injury cases. Mr. Schmid will share successful litigation strategies and discuss the resources available to the burn survivor, her family, and the burn injury attorney.

This program provides categories of commonly litigated burn injuries, an overview of the types of experts you may need, theories of liability, strategies for presenting damages and resources you and your clients must be aware of. Mr. Schmid will share examples from his experiences as a successful burn injury lawyer.

David Schmid

Stark & Stark

David M. Schmid is a member of Stark & Stark’s Personal Injury Group. Mr. Schmid is certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Certified Civil Trial Attorney. He focuses his practice on cases involving serious and catastrophic injuries, with an emphasis on severe burn injuries, construction injuries, automobile negligence, and premises liability.

Mr. Schmid takes on cases with the goal of bringing meaningful change to the people involved and changing behavior at a societal level. Often, these are cases that require substantial time and resources, which can be overwhelming to other attorneys and other law firms.

Mr. Schmid serves his clients through his involvement in professional organizations operated for the benefit of burn survivors and other seriously injured victims. He is a member of the American Burn Association and National Fire Protection Association and frequently contributes articles and blogs focusing on the care, recovery and rights of burn injury survivors. Mr. Schmid is a volunteer camp counselor at the Camp Susquehanna burn camp for adolescent burn survivors. He is also a member of the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors’ “Team Phoenix” through which he raises funds for burn survivors.

Mr. Schmid serves as a leader of associations dedicated to preserving legal rights of individuals and access to the courts. He is on the Board of Governors of the New Jersey Association for Justice (NJAJ) and serves as a co-chair of the New Lawyer and Law Student Relations Committees. He has co-authored numerous amicus briefs on behalf of NJAJ.

In addition, Mr. Schmid is a member of the American Association for Justice, the Mercer County Bar Association, and the Burlington County Bar Association. Mr. Schmid is also certified by the Administrative Office of the Courts as a mediator in the State of New Jersey.

Mr. Schmid continues to serve his community through his involvement in various non-profit organizations. He sits on the Board of Directors of Camp Fire New Jersey where he is a member of the Executive Committee. He is also a member of the Lower Makefield Township Economic Development Commission.

Prior to joining Stark & Stark, Mr. Schmid worked as an attorney for a defense personal injury law firm in Southern New Jersey. He simultaneously served as the Municipal Prosecutor for the City of Woodbury from 2009-2011. Mr. Schmid also served as the law clerk to the Hon. David W. Morgan, J.S.C. for the State of New Jersey Judiciary, Vicinage XV.
