Jeffrey A. Margolis has maintained a specialty in commercial real estate law since 1973, when he became “the” (back then there was only one) real estate associate at Whitman & Ransom (now, Winston & Strawn). Subsequently, Mr. Margolis practiced real estate law with the well-known New York firms of Marshall, Bratter, Greene, Allison & Tucker (1976-79), and Goldfarb & Fleece (1980-1982). He started the “Margolis Law Firm” in 1982.
In the real estate field, Attorney Margolis has represented domestic and foreign clients in connection with acquisitions and sales of all types of properties, with special emphasis on office, industrial and retail (especially retail/shopping center) leasing. Jeff was formerly a senior leasing attorney with the Marshall, Bratter law firm (then counsel to Cadillac Fairview Shopping Centers) where he assisted in the drafting of a “standard” modern shopping center lease form, devised new methodology for more efficient lease negotiation/administration, and personally negotiated hundreds of leases with majors, national chains and local retailers. He also spent two years as part of the leasing, sales and acquisitions team for a select group of New York real estate families like the Rudins, Tisches and the Swig, Weiler, Arnow interests. For the period 1984 to date Jeff has been on the approved counsel list for The Equitable Companies and their various real estate divisions, including Equitable Real Estate Investment Management (EREIM) and Compass Management and Leasing. (These businesses were acquired by the Lendlease organization out of Australia.) His work with The Equitable included acquisitions and sales of investment properties and substantial office, retail and industrial leasing.
Jeff Margolis is a graduate of Brooklyn Law School where he was a member of the Brooklyn Law Review. Over the years he has lectured on commercial real estate at New York University's Real Estate Institute and Fordham Law School. Jeff has also served as seminar leader on cutting-edge real estate topics at the ICSC (International Council of Shopping Centers) Law Conference and for NACORE (the National Association of Commercial Real Estate Executives). Further, as a member of the Committee on Real Property Law of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, Margolis was a co-draftsman of the last major revision of the “standard” New York form of condominium sales contract. Currently, he is a frequent contributor to Brownstone Publications’ Commercial Lease Law Insider.
