Understanding Virginia Adoption Law: A State and Federal Perspective
About this Program
Please note: This course is available for Guardian ad Litem credit in Virginia ONLY.
Adoptions are a delicate and sensitive issue, even without all the legal problems that may arise. Join Attorney Colleen Quinn as she illuminates both Federal and Virginia laws surrounding the adoption process. She begins with an explanation of the home study, why it is important to pass it and also why it may be required in the adoption process. Ms. Quinn then continues to explain the difference between going to an agency for an adoption versus not using an agency and the significance of agencies with international adoptions.
As Ms. Quinn explains in the presentation, even conducting a domestic adoption through an agency can be tricky as there are all kinds of issues that arise when dealing with interstate adoptions. Continuing, she also discusses the different types of adoptions and what special consent or acknowledgement may be necessary in order to finalize the adoption. Ms. Quinn also briefly goes over the cost of adoption, the possibility of adopting an American Indian child and the problems that may arise when trying to adopt a child.

Very informative and a great teacher
One of the very best CLEs I have ever seen.
The topic was interesting. The speaker being an expert herself made the topic interesting.
Well done, good presenter, excellent grasp of the materials.
In my work for a health care system, we have women who give birth and adoption is their choice. This was helpful to understand the basic laws and procedures that applies.
I really enjoyed Colleen's presentation. The pace was fast and she gave out a lot of practical, as well as legal, information.
This was the single best CLE I have taken. She was informative, stayed on topic, and managed to get a lot of extremely relevant information into a short time. Kept my attention the whole time. I will recommend this to other family law attorneys.
very well done.
very clear and perfect update/refresher course.
Very good... I wish there had been a bit more discussion of the relevant code sections, but i think I can look them up from thehandout.
