In today’s world, two out of every five first marriages end in divorce and the statistics skyrocket for every subsequent marriage. At the same time, international divorce has become more common in America, particularly due to the influx of immigrants. Join nationally recognized divorce expert Sherri Donovan for her discussion on the general rules on international divorce and the circumstances when a foreign divorce is recognized as valid in the United States. Using a helpful real world case of an immigrant couple living and working in the U.S who return to their native country to obtain the divorce, Ms. Donovan explains the Hague Convention's rules on international divorce and bi-lateral divorce. The difficult topics of domestic abuse and child kidnapping in the international divorce context are also reviewed in detail as well as when New York state acknowledges the Hague rules, foreign orders for child/spousal support and/or counsel fees. This course will be beneficial for all attorneys who practice in international and family law and are looking for a refresher course that provides the basic rules and regulations of this prominent issue.
