In the midst of these difficult economic times, lawyers must learn to market themselves more effectively and to expand their practice areas without exposing themselves to unnecessary risk. Using their top ten list of reasons attorneys do not want to market themselves, Allan Colman and attorney David A. Grossbaum dispel the usual concerns about marketing and demonstrate how attorneys can promote themselves while at the same time respecting the limits placed on them by the Rules of Professional Conduct. Mr. Colman and Mr. Grossbaum discuss the specific Rules that may be implicated in attorney marketing efforts including rules concerning competence, confidentiality, fees, advertising, and referrals. In addition, Mr. Colman and Mr. Grossbaum outline a detailed plan of attack lawyers should use to make themselves more appealing to potential clients and reveal how billing clients can be used as another marketing tool. David can come to California and be a stand-in for former and future governor Jerry Brown! I'm a salesmen who became a lawyer. This really resonated for me. I've always been amazed at how few lawyers can market or even want to. I did get soured on the process as an associate, when clients I had cultivated were whisked away by aggrandizing partners who kept me from maintaining or profiting from the relationship. Self-defeating tactic, isn't it?

I found the seminar to be very informative in that it covered a broad area without bogging down into too much detail, however, it was effective in alerting me to many of the potential pitfalls in marketing.
