What's that Worth? How to Value and Appraise Intellectual and Real Property
| Faculty: | Weston Anson, Logan Lo |
| Production Date: | May 8 2012 |
Description
Property is as old a concept as exists in our modern world. Real property and intellectual property have taken center stage when it comes to the creation and management of wealth. Understanding how those two very different concepts of "property" are valued is crucial for any modern lawyer, whether it be for fundraising, litigation, or damages. This lecture is given in two parts by attorney and MAI-certified appraiser Logan Lo and intellectual property valuation expert Weston Anson. Mr. Anson is an international lecturer and author of several books, including most recently, IP Valuation and Management, published by the ABA. Mr. Lo is an intellectual property attorney who has lectured on IP both in the U.S. and in Europe on various intellectual property matters and also holds the prestigious MAI appraisal designation from the Appraisal Institute.
Together they look at the various methodologies used to value these two very dissimilar kinds of property as they relate to the legal profession. Mr. Lo will speak about the history of appraising in the U.S., detail the various levels of appraisers and the MAI designation. He also explains the basics of valuation methodology and the different approaches to valuating property. Mr. Anson illustrates, via case studies, how different kinds of IP – such as trademarks, copyrights and patents - are valued.
