In recent years, “reality television” has grown into a thriving genre within the entertainment industry. Along with its rapid growth, reality television has spawned numerous legal issues as traditionally scripted works have been replaced by unique formats. In this CLE program, join intellectual property attorney Amy Goldsmith and entertainment attorney Ethan Bordman in a lively presentation of the common legal issues that prevail in the reality television industry. Mr. Bordman begins the presentation by discussing contractual clauses that were in dispute from popular shows and movies (“Borat,” “Extreme Makeover,” “Candid Camera,” "Housewives of Beverly Hills" and many more). He also goes over how to provide the best advice and protection to clients who decide to participate in these types of shows. Ms. Goldsmith focuses on the copyrightable elements of reality television – she explains what parts are copyrightable and which are not. She also presents several well-known cases where “copycat” shows were litigated and their outcomes (“Survivor,” “The Apprentice”).
