Congressional leaders were concerned about the rapidly growing number of immigrant women unwilling to report sex crimes, domestic abuse, and trafficking, as such, Congress passed the Battered Immigrant Women Protection Act in 2000.  This Act paved the way for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (“USCIS”) to grant special “U Visas” to immigrants (both male and female) who are victims of egregious crimes and cooperate with authorities to prosecute the perpetrators.  In this program, immigration attorney Harlan York provides an extensive examination of U Visas and the winning strategies that can be employed by attorneys to successfully obtain them for their clients.  Mr. York begins his presentation with a discussion of the requirements for a U Visa and the supporting documents required with the application.  He then explains how to handle an initial intake meeting, ask critical questions, and assess the strength of a potential client’s case.  Mr. York does a stellar job of explaining how to overcome common pitfalls (removal proceedings, ineligibility, and missing documents), and also stresses the importance of establishing a rapport with law enforcement so that the essential “Supplemental B” form can be acquired.  This program is a must see for immigration attorneys who want to learn how to file U Visas on their clients’ behalf.
