Do you have biases? The impulsive response is to say “Of course not!” However, the human brain is capable of exhibiting implicit and explicit biases, whether it be consciously done or not. In this program, attorney and mediator Myer J. Sankary discusses how attorneys can take measures to eliminate bias in the legal system. He describes several examples in which innocent individuals endured harsh penalties because they were victimized by society’s stereotypes and biases. Mr. Sankary uses the science of the brain to analyze how bias is formed and leveraged in communities. This course will allow attorneys in all practice areas to caution from erring in the judgment of a case due to biases not only of their clients, but also of their own. Furthermore, this course will help attorneys to become come aware of whether there is any bias present in their work and how they can manage their actions and thoughts to eliminate it. This program teaches that bias is a cancer that spreads quickly, but can be treated early.
