Criminal Law Practice in New York Local Courts

Faculty: Steven C. Davidson
Production Date: December 16 2010

Description

The rules of criminal law practice and procedure in New York local courts can seem idiosyncratic and confusing for those new to the environment. Sharing insights from his many years of experience as a criminal lawyer in New York State, attorney Steven Davidson provides a step-by-step introduction to the practice of criminal law in local courts, focusing on those outside of New York City's five boroughs. Mr. Davidson begins this course with a thorough discussion of the arraignment process, including bail applications and adjournments, and illuminates evidentiary procedures such as open file discovery and Omnibus Motions. Additionally, Mr. Davidson examines how attorneys can best represent their clients with respect to pleas and sentencing, settlement offers, jury selection, and immigration and deportation issues. With reference to a number of personal experiences and hypothetical cases, Mr. Davidson provides guidance on how New York attorneys can extend their criminal law practice to local courts.

Mr. Davidson was GREAT!! He went beyond just the straight advice of crim law, and into practical, really great HUMN elements of how to deal with your case and client as a whole person. I find that invaluable advice, as the mark of a good lawyer is not just the straight knowledge of the mechanics of law, but how it and the whole process actually relates to and affects your client. This is expecially important in areaas of law, such as criminal, that have such a personal affect. Mr. Davidson hit that home very well. He was terrific in that arena. Invaluable.

The presenter was good, he provided examples that are similar to my experience.

John (Suffern, NY)

Very personable, likeable, down-to-earth presenter, easy on the ear, and matter-of-fact about local courts, which cannot easily be captured in all their local color in a 50-minute presentation. He seems to care about people (including his clients and fellow attorneys and court personnel). He seems to have been a "newcomer" to this CLE format, but should be encouraged to continue doing CLE. I think I might call him for the advice that he so generally offers, even though I am myself a local court veteran in other states. His characterization of local courts rings very true.
