The American public places extraordinary value on procedural fairness, making it imperative that all attorneys and judges be equipped with the knowledge to recognize, avoid, or remedy unfair or unequal treatment in the court system.  In his fifth program with Lawline.com, Kenneth Hagreen, attorney and Executive Director of Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers of Pennsylvania, Inc., discusses the importance of procedural fairness, and the impact of perceived negative treatment on an individual’s relationship with the court, the justice system, and legal practitioners. Mr. Hagreen dissects the factors of procedural unfairness, and offers tips on how attorneys can help build their clients’ trust through communication, neutrality and non-verbal behaviors, and respectful treatment. Additionally, Mr. Hagreen explores recent studies concerning client satisfaction levels with regard to procedural fairness issues, and suggests ways for attorneys to improve their listening and verbal skills  in order to increase their clients’ understanding of the court process. This is an invaluable program for all attorneys seeking guidance on how to avoid malpractice liability by clarifying client expectations, promoting fairness, and improving court outcomes for victims and litigants.

I have heard a couple other presentations by Ken Hagreen recently and I think his materials for this course were far and a way the best -- both thorough and organized -- relative to his other courses. while this shouldn't be the case, I found that his presentation opened my eyes on some issues that are important and seem like they ought to be obvious, but aren't. At least to some of us. I plan on using a number of his recommendations.

Benjamin (New York, NY)

Absolutely superb. This was among the very best programs I have seen here because it addressed the perception issues that many lawyers overlook as they "think and act like lawyers." Feelings--and the human need for intuitive justice--play a huge role in legal disputes, even if they play no role in technical case adjudication (on paper, at least). There is a reason people hate lawyers: Because they appear tone-deaf, aloof and because they often fail to listen to clients (and other laymen) like human beings with emotions. This program provides very good advice on how to overcome these barriers, but it is no easy road. To be what the client wants, a lawyer often must be a therapist, too. Unfortunately, most lawyers are so pressed for time and money that they do not have the patience to take the time that clients require for emotional satisfaction in a representation. But at least the speaker here raised these issues and provided no-nonsense tips for resolving them.
