Practical and Legal Issues in Building Renovations

Faculty: Kenneth M. Block, James F. Crystal, John-Patrick Curran, Howard Zimmerman
Production Date: October 27 2010

Description

From contract disputes to undesired impact on tenants, building renovations and facade restorations implicate a seemingly endless series of legal problems and potential conflicts. In this program, architect Howard L. Zimmerman, construction and environmental law attorneys, John-Patrick Curran and Kenneth Block, and insurance specialist, James F. Crystal elucidate the complicated issues involved in carrying out large-scale construction projects though an examination of some New York City renovation projects. Mr. Zimmerman begins with a discussion of the ins and outs of commercial renovation, focusing on issues specific to interior, facade, and rooftop renovations.  Next, Mr. Curran delineates important concerns involved in drafting construction contracts, including the relationship and responsibilities of the contracting parties, the description of the work and determination of cost, and responsibility for time and scheduling. Finally, Mr. Crystal rounds out this highly informative presentation by examining the various types of construction-related insurance programs such as Owner Controlled, Owner’s Interest, Builder’s Risk, and Pollution Liability plans.  This course prepares viewers to face the myriad of complex legal issues involved in their clients' renovation and restoration projects and will be extremely helpful for all attorneys involved in their own construction challenges.
